SHOPS

There are several supermarkets and lots of restaurants in Skala. Over the years we have found that Solomos Supermarket on the main street, whilst not the cheapest, is the best. It stocks lots of familiar products from the UK and has most things that you’ll need. The pharmacy is also located on the main street a little further up on the left. The staff speak English and are very helpful.

RESTAURANTS

Greeks love eating! There are so many cafes and tavernas on the island……far too many to mention, here are a few of our personal favourites.

SKALA / POROS

On your doorstep

This is the nearest restaurant to Villa Laura.  It sits above Kaminia Beach and can be reached by turning left at the ‘main road’ and taking the first right to Mounda Beach. Carry on along the beach track and you will find it on your right above the Beach Bar. It is owned and run by the Stamati family who cook lovely grilled fish and other traditional Greek dishes and always make you feel very welcome.  Our ‘local’.

Further afield, just as you enter Poros, you turn left up the hill (quite steep) – there is a sign to the taverna on the left from the main road. One of our favourites, “Sunset Taverna” not only has great traditional food, but also a stunning view, particularly at sunset! Voula, the owner, is a talented singer/songwriter and later in the evening often picks up her guitar and entertains her guests.

In Skala itself, “Paspalis” is on the main beach road to Poros and has a very good selection of traditional food. It, too, is family-owned and everything is of a consistently high quality.

SAMI

If you make the trip over the hill to Sami, there are two places worth a visit

Is a cafe on the harbour road near the port entrance, which makes a great coffee and has wonderful baklava (and all sorts of other fantastic pastries).

Again on the harbour road – the other side to Nea Sami – this restaurant specialises in modern Greek cuisine.  This is fine dining by the harbour; it’s quite different, very trendy and definitely worth a (long) visit.  A must.

TRAPEZAKI

On the way to Argostoli

Venturing in the other direction, towards Argostoli, this restaurant is on Trapezaki Beach. You cannot miss it. Again, they take traditional Greek dishes and give them a twist. The manager is very proud of his menu and the location on the beach is lovely.

ARGOSTOLI

Should you go for a trip to Argostoli, there are many more shops and restaurants

A cafe on the harbour road and where the locals go for a coffee.  Where we (like the rest of Argostoli) like to chat and watch the world go by.

It is in the centre of Argostoli and a restaurant with a lovely garden setting and a sophisticated menu. It takes a bit of finding but well worth the effort.

A café opposite Piraeus Bank, it serves excellent coffee and home-baked cakes.
